Artist Statement

My name is Drew Davis. I am a 25 year-old working, painting, breathing artist living on the Central Coast. I’ve been here my whole life. I came from a semi-normal, half-dysfunctional, Christian family background… I was surrounded by art, music, electronics and animals roaming freely. Today, I am basically a sarcastic coffee-drinking artist making an effort to seek God in this rent-paying corporate jungle. I feel like a blue tomato in a field of corn. To say my slightly tweaked, dry humor and subtle wit plays no part in my painting would be a lie. Every painting is an emotion, an experiment, a discovery, and an experience. Sometimes, they just work- quick and clean. While other times they are painful and messy; some days more of a joke than anything else (kinda like life). I work loosely & free- usually to some up-beat tunes. I pay attention to detail and intensity with minimal intention. What’s most important to me is that the color and composition are in awe of the feeling of completeness- without being over-done or over-worked (kinda like this sentence). Sometimes I think I am a gourmet (pigment) chef- concocting a deliciously unrestrained entrée for a 5 star restaurant – a feast for the eyes…but that’s just me.
